Chief of the Boat

CCSCM(SS) Mark Shipley

Master Chief Shipley was born in Chicago, Illinois and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August 2000.

His first sea assignment was USS NEBRASKA (SSBN-739)(B) from April 2001 to March 2004 followed by shore duty as Submarine Group 10’s Flag MS from March 2004 to January 2005.

He reported to USS PHILADELPHIA (SSN-690) in January 2005 followed by his second shore assignment at Naval Submarine Support Center Groton in July 2008.

In March 2009, he volunteered for assignment as an Individual Augmentee to Bagram, Afghanistan. With “boots on ground” in Afghanistan, he opened two Dining Facilities and was one of two First Class Petty Officers allowed to be a Guard Force Commander in the Detention Facility.

In January 2010, he returned to NSSC Groton for a second tour followed by his third sea assignment to USS HARTFORD (SSN-768) as the Supply Department Chief. In July 2016, he transferred to Navy Food Management Team Norfolk, New London detachment where he supervised daily operations for the Groton waterfront.

In July 2019, he reported to PCU IOWA (SSN-797) as the Chief of the Boat followed by another COB tour onboard USS COLORADO (SSN-788) in January 2021. In September 2022, he reported to Naval Submarine School as the Basic Enlisted Submarine School Department Master Chief and Director overseeing the training and development of more than 3,000 future submariners.

In January 2024, Master Chief Shipley was hand-selected to serve at the first Chief of The Boat for the Columbia Class project – the PCU DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA (SSBN-826).
