It is my distinct honor to introduce you to the USS DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA (SSBN-826), the lead ship of the Columbia class submarines.
The commissioning committee will introduce Washingtonians to this remarkable vessel, familiarize the crew with the vibrant neighborhoods and rich culture of D.C. “beyond the monuments,” support STEM education for D.C. students with unique submarine-related projects, and more!
The Columbia class submarines are designed to be the cornerstone of our nation’s strategic deterrence mission for decades to come. As the lead ship, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA embodies the latest in stealth and operational capabilities, ensuring that our submarine force remains unmatched on the global stage. This cutting-edge technology, combined with the commitment and professionalism of our sailors, will enable us to maintain peace and stability worldwide.
Navy traditions for ships are steeped in history and ceremony. The process begins with the naming of the ship, often invoking historical figures or events. The keel-laying marks the start of construction, followed by the christening, where a sponsor breaks a bottle of champagne over the bow. Lastly, the commissioning is a grand affair, signifying the ship's readiness for active service, complete with the raising of the commissioning pennant. These time-honored rituals, dating back to the Continental Navy's first ship in 1775, celebrate the vessel's journey from construction to launching a formidable member of the fleet.
Stay tuned for more updates and opportunities to participate in this proud tradition. Thank you for your continued support as we work together to bring the DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA into service as she receives a celebration worthy of her high standards of excellence and readiness.
Fair winds and following seas!
