On 28 January, members of the USS District of Columbia Commissioning Committee had an opportunity to attend the National Defense American Legion Post #46, Department of the District of Columbia's monthly meeting at the Army Navy Club. The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities.

Post Commander, W. Marcus Bowers, and Senior Vice Commander, Jason Secrest, welcomed Committee members before turning the floor over to RADM(Ret) Dave Goggins, USN, USS District of Columbia Commissioning Committee Chairman. Dave provided Post members with an update on the construction of the first warship ever named for the District as well as our commissioning efforts. Dave closed his remarks asking for help from Post members, particularly in getting the word out to Washingtonians about this tremendous submarine named for their hometown.
